Scottish Hazards Conference, 16 November, Glasgow – this Thursday

Amicus secures £100,000 compensation for member following horrific accident at work

Amicus has secured £100,000 in compensation from Langley Holdings Plc for a Lincoln member who suffered a serious injury to his left hand including the loss of his left middle finger in an horrific accident at work. The compensation was secured by Amicus’ free legal help scheme via leading personal injury specialists Thompsons Solicitors.

New Asbestos Regulations in force

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 came into force on 13 November 2006. These Regulations bring together the three previous sets of Regulations covering the prohibition of asbestos, the control of asbestos at work and asbestos licensing. The Regulations prohibit the importation, supply and use of all forms of asbestos. They continue the ban introduced for blue and brown asbestos 1985 and for white asbestos in 1999. They also continue the ban the second-hand use of asbestos products such as asbestos cement sheets and asbestos boards and tiles; including panels which have been covered with paint or textured plaster containing asbestos.

New safety course and qualification for young people

A new qualification designed to improve young people’s understanding of safe working when taking part in work experience has been devised by the (HSE in partnership with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), British Safety Council Awards (BSC Awards) and ENTO.

Young people at work - new HSE website

Young people, especially those new to the workplace, will encounter unfamiliar risks from the jobs they will be doing and from the working environment. Following last month's European Safety Week theme of young people's safety at work, the HSE has launched a new website dealing with key issues to take into account when assessing the risks to young people at work.
